Arundhati Roy: News

Suzanna Arundhati Roy is a Booker Prize-winning author, actress, screenplay writer, and social activist. She is known for her award-winning fiction work and non-fiction writings criticizing capitalism, state-sponsored wars, the United States and its allies, and the Indian state. Roy studied architecture at Delhi’s School of Planning and Architecture. Before venturing into book-writing, she acted and wrote screenplays for several films and television dramas, winning the National Award for Best Screenplay for 'In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones' in 1989. Roy published her first book 'The God of Small Things', a semi-autobiographical fictional novel, in 1997. It became an instant international hit both critically and commercially, and she won the 1997 Booker Prize for the book. She has published many books since, including The Ministry of Utmost Happiness in 2017. While praised by some for her courageous and pointed writings, Roy is criticized by others for her deliberately provocative and allegedly seditious statements directed against India: advocating Kashmir’s independence, defending Naxal-Maoist insurgents, and blaming India for the 2001 Parliament and 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Roy is also one of the most vocal critics of the Narendra Modi-led Indian Government.
